…Musical consciousness grew in the second half of the 19th century, and the first professional orchestra was founded in 1888. Two important musicians in the early 20th century were Alfred Hill (1870-1960), who was active as a composer and conductor and director of the New South Wales Conservatorium of Music, and Percy Grainger (1882-1961), who predicted major developments in Australian music as early as the 1930s. The works of composers belonging to the wartime generation were conservative, modelled on the early 20th century European trends of post-impressionism and neoclassicism, and very few composers introduced avant-garde techniques such as twelve-tone technique. …
