Pachycheles stevensii (English name)

Japanese: コブカニダマシ（英語表記）Pachycheles stevensii

A crustacean of the family Ploceidae (illustration). Although it has the shape of a crab, it is a member of the hermit crab family. It has been recorded from Vladivostok, and is found along the Pacific coast from southern Hokkaido to Kyushu. It lives under rocks on reefs, but is not as common as the sea crab Ploceidae, which lives in a similar location. The carapace is 1.5 cm wide. The body is somewhat thick and purplish brown. The carapace is almost the same length and width, but the forehead protrudes in a triangular shape, making it appear slightly elongated. The carapace surface is smooth. The chelicerae are broad in both the arm and palm, and are disproportionately large compared to the body, with the right side being slightly larger.

カニダマシ科の甲殻類（イラスト）。カニの形をしているが，ヤドカリの仲間である。ウラジオストクから記録されているほか，北海道南部から九州までの太平洋岸各地に見られる。岩礁の石の下にすむが，同じような場所にすむイソカニダマシほど多くはない。甲幅1.5cm。体はやや厚みがあり，紫色がかった茶色をしている。甲は長さと幅がほぼ同じであるが，額が三角形に突き出しているため，やや縦長に見える。甲面は滑らか。はさみ脚は腕節，掌部とも幅広くて体に不つりあいなほど大きいが，右側がやや大きい。
