…This is a water-lifting machine, but examples of the use of water wheels powered by water flow include water wheels built in the 18th century in Nadame on the southern foot of Mt. Rokko, the foothills of the Hokusetsu region south of Yamazaki, and the western foot of the Ikoma mountain range. In Nadame, a village specializing in oil pressing, called Suisha Shinden, was established, with 25 oil-powered water wheels, and a total of 81 oil-powered water wheels were in operation along the Rokko River, Sumiyoshi River, and Ashiya River. These oil-powered water wheels quickly surpassed the oil pressing power of the manual oil pressing industry that had already developed in the 17th century in Osaka, Sakai, Hirano-go, and other areas. …
