[Died] March 30, 1986. Stamfordville, New York. American actor. Full name James Francis Cagney, Jr. He was active in a wide range of roles, including musicals, comedies, and crime dramas. He grew up in the Lower East Side of New York as the son of an Irish bartender. In the 1920s, he toured with his wife Frances as a singer and dancer in a vaudeville troupe, and in 1929, he appeared in the Broadway musical "Penny Arcade," his first success. In 1930, he made his film debut, playing the ruthless gangster Tom Powers in William Wellman's The Public Enemy (1931), which earned him stardom. He continued to appear in films, playing arrogant and passionate "tough guys," but he also continued to work in musicals. He won an Academy Award for Best Actor for his role as legendary Broadway showman George M. Cohan in Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942). He subsequently devoted his time to entertaining American troops stationed overseas and serving as president of the Screen Actors Guild, which he helped found in the early 1930s. He continued to work as a film actor in the 1950s, but retired for 20 years after his appearance in One, Two, Three (1961). His final film appearance was a special appearance in Ragtime (1981).
