The protagonist of the ancient Babylonian epic poem, written in cuneiform script and spanning 3,000 lines, Gilgamesh, king of Uruk, wanders in search of eternal life after the death of his best friend Enkidu, and finally finds his way to the afterlife. It had a major impact on the religion and literature of the peoples of Western Asia, and the flood story in it is the prototype for Noah's Ark in the Old Testament.
