〘Noun〙 Eight sects of Buddhism that were widely practiced during the Heian period. Namely, the general term for the Nara Six Schools of Kusha , Jojitsu , Vinaya, Hosso , Sanron, and Kegon, plus Tendai and Shingon . Eight schools. ※Hobutsushu (around 1179): "Divided into eight schools of exoteric and esoteric teachings, it consists of 5,312 sutras and treatises."
