Japanese: サルボオガイ(猿頰貝) - サルボオガイ（英語表記）Scapharca subcrenata

An edible bivalve of the family Arcidae. The shell is 7.5 cm long, 5.5 cm high, and 5 cm bulged. It is rectangular, thick, and white, but has a velvety black-brown skin on the surface. It also has 30 to 34 thick radial ribs. A diamond-shaped flat ligament is located between the apexes. The inner surface is white. Many small teeth are lined up where the shells meet. The flesh is orange due to hemoglobin. There is a hole behind the mantle membrane for water to enter and exit, but it is not a water tube. It is mainly found in areas south of Tokyo Bay, the Seto Inland Sea, and the Ariake Sea, and is also distributed along the west coast of the Korean Peninsula and northern China.

フネガイ科の食用二枚貝。殻の長さ7.5cm，高さ5.5cm，膨らみ5cmに達する。長方形状で，厚くて白色であるが，表面には黒褐色のビロード状の皮をかむる。また30～34本の太い放射肋がある。殻頂の間にひし形の平らな靱帯面がある。内面は白色。両殻のかみ合せには小さい歯がたくさん並ぶ。肉はヘモグロビンのために橙色を帯びる。外套（がいとう）膜の後方に水の出入りの穴ができるが，水管にはなっていない。東京湾以南，瀬戸内海，有明海などを主産地とし，また朝鮮半島西岸，中国北部にも分布する。
