Bassani - Bassani (English spelling) Giorgio Bassani

Italian author. Born in Bologna. During the Fascist era, he was imprisoned for anti-government activities and persecuted as a Jew. This dark and heavy experience of being oppressed in a double sense determined the unique tone of his literature, and the foundation of his works is always the bourgeois Jewish community of Ferrara, where he spent his childhood and adolescence. His major works include the short story collection "Five Tales from Ferrara" (1956), the full-length novels "The Garden of the Finzi-Contini Family" (1962) and "The Heron" (1968), but other important pillars of his literary activities include the poetry collection "Dawn at the Glass Window" (1963), and the collections of essays "Prepared Words" (1966) and "Beyond the Mind" (1984). However, the incident in which Bassani released G. Tomasi di Lampedusa's novel The Leopard (1958), which E. Vittorini had condemned as a work lacking literary responsibility, with great praise, will be a major yardstick for evaluating his literature.

イタリアの作家。ボローニャ生まれ。ファシズム期には反政府活動により投獄され、ユダヤ人としても迫害を受けた。二重の意味で弾圧されたこの暗く重い体験が彼の文学の特異な色調を決定づけており、作品の基盤には、幼年期から青年期までを過ごしたフェッラーラのブルジョア・ユダヤ人共同体がつねに据えられている。短編集『フェッラーラの五つの物語』（1956）、長編小説『フィンツィ‐コンティーニ家の庭』（1962）、『鷺(さぎ)』（1968）などが主要作品であるが、詩集『ガラス窓の夜明け』（1963）、評論集『用意された言葉』（1966）、『心の向こうに』（1984）なども、彼の文学活動の重要な支柱である。ただし、文学的責務に欠ける作品としてE・ビットリーニが断罪したG・トマージ・ディ・ランペドゥーザの長編小説『山猫』（1958）を、バッサーニが絶賛して世に送り出した事件は、彼の文学を評価するうえで、一つの大きな尺度になるであろう。
