A family of Italian painters, nicknamed after their hometown, Bassano, a small city in northern Italy. The representative of the family, Jacopo Bassano (1517/18-92), whose real name was Jacopo da Ponte, was the son of the local painter Francesco Bassano. He stayed in Venice for a while from around 1534, where he was exposed to the excellent painting techniques of Lorenzo Lotto and Titian. He was also influenced by Mannerism, which was becoming popular at the time, particularly through his study of Parmigiano's etchings, and traces of this style remain in his Madonna and Child with Two Saints (Alte Pinakothek, Munich). The results of his training in Venice are shown in Adoration of the Shepherds (Hampton Court Palace) and Beheading of the Baptist (National Gallery of Art, Copenhagen), which depict Bible stories in the artist's unique genre painting style. Of Jacopo's four children, two became independent painters. The eldest son, Francesco B. (1549-92), followed in his father's style and produced many narrative historical paintings. The other, Leandro B. (1557-1622), trained under his brother and established himself as a portrait painter, but is said to have been influenced by Tintoretto. He lived in Venice from 1588 and died there. [Katsuya Hamatani] [Reference] |Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
