White Rainbow Incident

A newspaper editorial scandal occurred in 1918. At the time, the Osaka Asahi Shimbun, led by its editor-in-chief Torii Sogawa, Hasegawa Nyozekan, Oyama Ikuo and others, was engaged in public opinion activities in support of the Taisho Democracy movement, and was particularly sharply critical of the Terauchi Masaki Cabinet regarding the rice riots. As a result, the Terauchi Cabinet found in an article at the Kansai Newspaper Press Conference held in August of that year that the phrase "A white rainbow pierces the sun" was used, and they claimed that this constituted a violation of the Constitution, and prosecuted the newspaper for violating the Newspaper Law. There was also an incident in which a right-wing group assaulted the president, Murayama Ryuhei. In an attempt to resolve the situation, the Osaka Asahi replaced the president with Ueno Riichi, and issued a self-criticizing statement of explanation, thus avoiding a publication ban. During that time, Torii and many other executives left the company.

1918年に起きた新聞筆禍事件。当時《大阪朝日新聞》は，鳥居素川編集局長以下，長谷川如是閑，大山郁夫らが〈大正デモクラシー〉運動に立つ言論活動を展開，とくに米騒動などに関して寺内正毅内閣を鋭く批判していた。そのため寺内内閣は，同年８月に開かれた〈関西新聞社通信社大会〉記事中に〈白虹日を貫ぬけり〉の語句のあることをとらえ，これが朝憲紊乱(びんらん)に当たるとし，同紙を新聞紙法違反で起訴した。右翼団体が社長村山竜平に暴行を加える事件も起き，事態収拾を図った《大阪朝日》は社長を上野理一にかえ，自己批判の内容弁明書を発して発行禁止を免れた。その間鳥居ら幹部多数が退社。
