A port city on the northern coast of the Shandong Peninsula in China. Its current name is Weihai. During the Ming Dynasty, it became a base for defense against Japanese pirates, and in the late Qing Dynasty, under the guidance of German advisors, it developed into a base for the Beiyang Navy. It was occupied during the First Sino-Japanese War, but in 1898, Britain leased it to China for 25 years in opposition to Russia's lease of Port Arthur and Dalian. It was returned to China in 1921 as a result of the Washington Conference. Source: Obunsha World History Dictionary, Third Edition About Obunsha World History Dictionary, Third Edition |
