A dual-purpose cattle breed found mainly in Kumamoto and Kochi prefectures, distributed throughout the Kanto and Tohoku regions. It is docile by nature and suitable for working. Its meat quality is slightly inferior to that of the Japanese Black, but the amount of meat produced is comparable. The Kumamoto strain is reddish brown and has a single coat, while the Kochi strain is called "hair splitting," and is popular for its brown coat and black horns, hooves, nose, and other skin.
