...Also written as yukitama. A type of footwear made of bamboo sandals with animal skin on the sole and a piece of iron on the heel. It is said that Sen no Rikyu invented it for use outdoors in the snow, but this is a popular myth. It developed from shikire, which had animal skin on the sole of the base and was used by aristocrats and samurai in the Heian period. In the Edo period book Kebukuso (1638), bamboo sandals with yukitama are listed as a product of Settsu Province. Since setiben (stingy) people used bamboo sandals, they were called setida, and people who enjoyed the business used the characters yukitama and setta. ...
