An ancient kingdom located at the mouth of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, at the head of the Persian Gulf. The region was called Messene, but was later called Karachene after its principal city, Charax. Hyspaosines, who was appointed governor by the Seleucid king Antiochus IV, gained independence in the second half of the 2nd century BCE. It prospered as a key point on the east-west trade route from the Persian Gulf to Petra and later Palmyra. After lasting for about 350 years, it was conquered by Ardashir I of the Sassanid Empire in 224 AD. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
