Two letters in the New Testament written by Paul from Corinth, Greece, to the group of Christians in Thessalonica around 50 AD. They are also called the Epistles of the Thessalonians. For convenience, they are divided into the first and second letters. They are considered to be the earliest surviving letters of Paul, and therefore the first surviving Christian records. During his second missionary journey, Paul stopped in Thessalonica with Silvanus and Timothy to preach the gospel, but the situation became unfavorable and he fled to Berea. In the first letter, based on a report from Timothy who was sent to Thessalonica, Paul first defends his own gospel work, then praises the faith and love of the believers, and further exhorts them to comfort one another with the hope of salvation, respect their overseers, walk the path of faith, and wait for the day of the Lord, which will suddenly come. The second book also calls for strengthening one's faith and working hard in one's daily work before the coming Day of the Lord, but some believe that the author was not Paul because of his interpretation of the eschatology.
