...When a current flows through a conductor and a magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the current, an electric field is generated perpendicular to both the current and the magnetic field. It was discovered in 1879 by American Edwin Herbert Hall (1855-1938), hence the name. If the directions of the current density, the generated electric field, and the magnetic field are taken as the x , y , and z directions _, respectively (see figure), and their magnitudes, including their signs _, are J , EH , and B , then EH / JB is called the Hall coefficient.
