〘noun〙① To make a promise by oath. Also, that promise. A covenant. ※Konpira Honpōgen (around 1220), part 2: "How could the chief priest forget his oath ? " ※Nobunagaki (1622), part 1: "The two men decided to protect Hikogoro-dono, and so they made a firm oath to each other." [Shū Zhi - Peng Biography ] ② A vow made by Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, or gods to save all living beings. A vow. ※Jinnō Shōtōki (1339-43), part 2: "Even in the latter days, the power of the gods is incredible. This should be a sure sign that the oath will not be broken."
