Japanese: 記憶素子 - きおくそし（英語表記）memory device

This refers to an element in computer circuits that stores information in some form and can be read out later. Traditionally, magnetic core memory (core memory), flip-flops, magnetic drums, magnetic disks, and magnetic tapes have been used, but IC memory using MOS transistors or bipolar transistors is widely used due to the demand for high density, low power consumption, and high speed response. Other elements that have potential as memory elements or storage devices include magnetic bubbles, amorphous semiconductors, charge transfer devices (CTDs), MNOS diodes, and holography, each with their own unique characteristics.

コンピュータの回路などで，情報をなんらかの形で記憶させ，あとで読出せる素子をいう。従来より磁性体による磁心記憶 (コアメモリ) ，フリップフロップ，磁気ドラム，磁気ディスク，磁気テープなどが用いられているが，高密度・低消費電力・高速応答などの要求から MOS型トランジスタあるいは双極型トランジスタによる ICメモリが広く用いられている。その他，磁気バブル，非晶質半導体，電荷転送デバイス (CTD) ，MNOSダイオード，ホログラフィなどがそれぞれ特徴ある記憶素子あるいは記憶装置としての可能性をもっている。
