…The history of deep sea diving is said to have begun in the early 1930s, when a deep sea sphere suspended from a mother ship in the United States recorded a maximum depth of about 900m. The first full-scale deep sea submersible was the FNRSII, built in 1948 by A. Piccard using a pressure sphere with a diameter of 2m. The French Navy's four-man FNRSIII, which was an improvement on the FNRSII, recorded a diving depth of 2100m in 1953 and 4050m the following year. In 1953, Italy built a deep sea vessel of the same model as the FNRSII, the Trieste, which later became the property of the US Navy. In 1960, Piccard's son J. Piccard set the world's deepest diving depth record of 10,916m in the Mariana Trench. …
