A favorite of King James I of England. His tyranny led to growing criticism of the king in Parliament, which was an indirect cause of the later Puritan Revolution. He entered the royal court in 1614, won the king's favor, and rose in rank in a short time, becoming a duke in 1623. He accompanied the crown prince Charles (later King I) to Madrid, where he tried to establish a marriage relationship with the Spanish royal family, but failed. He took a hard-line stance against Spain, and under the new king, he attacked Cadiz in 1625 but was defeated, and then failed in an expedition to support Protestants in France. His repeated mismanagement and the increasing cost of war led to growing criticism, especially from Parliament, and he was impeached in 1626 and demanded to be dismissed in 1628, but the king protected him both times by dissolving and proroguing Parliament. He was assassinated in Portsmouth by a former soldier who had a personal grudge. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
