Compressed air engine

Japanese: 圧縮空気機関 - あっしゅくくうききかん

An engine that uses compressed air as the working fluid. Also known as an air motor. It uses the pressure of compressed air stored in an air tank to generate power to drive various machines. It is divided into positive displacement and turbo types, the former of which includes reciprocating types with cylinders and pistons, and rotary types with movable blades. Compared to electric motors and internal combustion engines, it is lighter and smaller, and is non-flammable, so it is often used in places where other prime movers cannot be used for safety reasons, such as underground mines and chemical plants where there are explosive gases.

圧縮空気を作動流体とする機関。エアモーターとも。空気槽にたくわえられた圧縮空気の圧力を利用して，各種機械を駆動する動力を取り出す。容積型とターボ型に分けられ，前者にはシリンダーとピストンをもつ往復式，可動羽根をもつ回転式などがある。電動機や内燃機関に比べ，軽量・小型で，不発火性の特色をもち，爆発性ガスのある坑内・化学工場内など保安上他の原動機を使用できないときに多く使用される。
