A copper-bearing iron sulfide deposit that occurs in lenticular to massive forms in basalt lava, which is part of ophiolites. It is so named because a typical example is known to exist on the island of Cyprus. It is mainly composed of pyrite and is also used as an iron sulfide resource. It is also known to occur in Turkey and the Canadian island of Newfoundland, but all of the deposits are low-grade (1-2% copper) and small in size, so their importance as a copper resource is low. No typical examples are known to exist in Japan, but some researchers include part of the Kieslager deposit in this type. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
