Upholstery - Hatsuki

Japanese:
Upholstery - Hatsuki
From the Muromachi period onwards, this casual attire was worn as summer clothing by low-ranking women serving at the Imperial Court. It is thought to have originated as a variation of the simple uchiki-style garment called hakuginu, worn by court nobles. The shape of the harigi is unclear as no actual examples remain today, but it is thought to have been a kosode-style garment worn over a kosode, or worn around the waist with the upper half of the body removed. Later, it was adopted as women's attire for samurai families, and was called a loincloth or shikire and worn over a katabira with the shoulders removed as formal attire in the palace in summer.
