Also known as carcinogens. A general term for chemicals that induce cancer. Carcinogens also exist in nature. Examples include mycotoxins such as aflatoxin, and nitrosamines that form in the stomach when secondary amines and nitrites are eaten together. Furthermore, some chemically synthesized substances are carcinogenic. Based on animal experiments with substances suspected of being carcinogenic, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified 50 types of substances that are clearly carcinogenic in Group 1, and approximately 200 types of substances that are suspected of being carcinogenic in Group 2. Most of these are substances that people come into contact with in their jobs or as medicines. The most carcinogenic substance is considered to be aflatoxin.

癌原物質とも。癌を誘発する化学物質の総称。発癌物質は自然界にも存在する。たとえばアフラトキシンに代表されるカビ毒，二級アミンと亜硝酸の食べ合せで胃の中に生じるニトロソアミンなどである。さらに，化学合成によってつくられた物質の中にも，発癌性をもつものがある。IARC（国際がん研究機関）では，発癌性の疑いのある物質の動物実験より，明らかに発癌性をもつものをグループ１として50種，疑いのあるものをグループ２として約200種をあげている。そのうちの大部分は職業上，あるいは医薬品として接する物質である。最も発癌性が強いものはアフラトキシンとされる。
