An ulcer that occurs in the duodenum. Together with gastric ulcers, it is called a peptic ulcer. It often develops in the bulb of the stomach close to the pylorus. Compared to gastric ulcers, it is more likely to recur, occurs more frequently in young people, and is often caused by excess stomach acid. It is strongly related to psychological factors, and is more likely to develop when overwork or tension continues. In recent years, the theory that infection with Helicobacter pylori is involved has become more prevalent. Symptoms include heartburn, belching, and upper abdominal pain (especially when hungry). It is mainly treated medically, but systematic medical care is necessary, and spices, stimulants, alcohol, tobacco, etc. should be avoided. Surgery is performed in cases of severe perforation or stenosis.

十二指腸に起こる潰瘍。胃潰瘍とともに消化性潰瘍と呼ばれる。胃の幽門に近い球部に発することが多い。胃潰瘍に比べて，反復発症が多く，若年者に多く生じ，胃酸過多の場合が多い。精神的要因の関連が強く，過労・緊張の持続に際し発症しやすい。近年，ピロリ菌（ヘリコバクター・ピロリ）の感染が関与しているとする説が有力となってきた。胸やけ，げっぷ，上腹部痛（特に空腹時）などがある。主として内科的に治療するが，系統的な加療が必要で，香辛料，興奮剤，アルコール，タバコなどは避ける。穿(せん)孔や狭窄(きょうさく)のはなはだしい場合は手術を行う。
