A general term for mammals of the Ailuridae family of the carnivora order, consisting of two species: the giant panda and the red panda. The lesser panda, Ailurus fulgens (illustration), is found in Nepal, Sikkim, northern Myanmar, and central and southern China. It has a body length of 51-64 cm, a tail length of 28-49 cm, and a weight of 3-4.5 kg. It has long, soft fur, a tufted tail, a chestnut-colored back, and a white face. It has a dark brown line from the eye to the corner of the mouth, and its underside and legs are black.
