[Saint-Simon's theory of classes]
The focus on class theory was developed through the modernization revolutions in Western European countries, especially the French Revolution, and was formulated into a theory first by Saint-Simon, then by Marx and Engels. Saint-Simon, who first formulated it, stated in his book Catéchisme politique des industriels (1823-24) that under the Ancien Régime before the French Revolution, France consisted of three classes: the nobility, the bourgeoisie, and the industrialists. He described the bourgeoisie as the middle class, the class that ruled the nobility, the class that subordinated the industrialists, and the middle class. However, in Saint-Simon's view, the French Revolution was a revolution in which the middle class won over the industrialists, expelled the nobility, and rose to become the ruling class.
