A thermoplastic resin obtained by polycondensation of terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol. It is abbreviated as PET. It is the raw material for polyester fiber and is also processed into film. The film has excellent dielectric strength and mechanical properties and is used for electrical insulation materials, photographic film, industrial tape, packaging materials, etc. The film used for bottles for drinking water, etc. is widely used as PET bottles and is subject to collection and recycling under the Containers and Packaging Recycling Law.

テレフタル酸とエチレングリコールとの重縮合によって得られる熱可塑性樹脂。PET（ペット）と略称。ポリエステル繊維の原料となり，フィルムにも加工される。フィルムは絶縁耐力，機械的性質がすぐれ，電気絶縁材料，写真用フィルム，工業用テープ，包装材料などに用いられ，飲料水などの瓶として使われるものはペットボトルとして広く普及し，容器包装リサイクル法による回収・再生の対象となっている。
