An Italian film made in 1963. In black and white. This is the ninth film directed by Federico Fellini, but his first film, The Limelight (1950), was co-directed with Alberto Lattuada, so it counts as half, and the title is simply 81/2 of his total works. From the title alone, we can see that this is a summary of his past works, a new starting point, and a manifesto. The protagonist is a film director (Marcello Mastroianni), who could be called Fellini's alter ego, whose creativity has been eroded by success, popularity, and money, and who is tormented by physiological fear before his next film, and this situation is depicted through groundbreaking image manipulation that treats reality, memory, and fantasy as equal.

1963年製作のイタリア映画。モノクロ作品。フェデリコ･フェリーニ監督の9本目の作品だが，第1作の《寄席の脚光》(1950)はアルベルト･ラットゥアーダとの共同監督であったので1/2と数え，総作品本数の81/2をそのまま題名にしたものである。この題名のつけ方からも，これが彼の過去の作品の総括であり，また新しい出発点であり，そのマニフェストであることがわかる。主人公はフェリーニの分身ともいうべき映画監督(マルチェロ･マストロヤンニ)で，成功と人気と金によって創作力をむしばまれ，次回作を前にして苦悩し生理的恐怖にさいなまれる状況が，現実と記憶と幻想を同質にあつかった画期的な映像操作によって描かれる。
