The country ruled by a Grand Duchy of Finland, i.e. Finland before it gained independence from Russia in the early 20th century. In Finnish, it is called Suomen suuriruhtinaskunta. The name was first officially used by Swedish King Johan III in 1581 to demonstrate his power on a par with Poland, which was united with the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and the Grand Duchy of Moscow. After that, the Swedish king usually held the title of Grand Duke of Finland as well, but in 1809, control of the Grand Duchy of Finland was transferred from Sweden to Russia, and from then on the Russian Tsar held the title of Grand Duke of Finland as well.
