Akanezumi (English name) Large Japanese field mouse

It is a member of the rodent family of mammals. It is found in Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, Sado Island, Tsushima, Oki, Iki, Yakushima, Tanegashima, Awaji Island, the Izu Islands, and the Goto Islands, and another subspecies, the Hokkaido spotted mouse, A. s. ainu , is found in Hokkaido. It inhabits a wide range of areas, including around cultivated fields, grasslands, and forests. It is rare in the subalpine and alpine zones, but will advance into those areas when the forests are cut down. It eats seeds and insects. It weighs 50 to 60 grams. It generally grows larger on remote islands, and can reach 80 grams in particular on Oki Dozen. On either side of the line connecting Toyama City and Hamamatsu City, the Japanese wood mouse of Tohoku Honshu has 48 chromosomes, while those of Southwest Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu have 46, and there is a roughly corresponding difference in the size of the molars, which are smaller in the former. They breed all year round except midsummer in lowlands and southern distribution areas, and from spring to summer in highlands and northern areas, producing 2-8 young per litter. The continental species A. peninsulae giliacus also lives in Hokkaido. They are involved in Izu Shichito fever (a type of scrub typhus) as they are hosts for the tsutsugamushi mites that carry the pathogen.

哺乳(ほにゅう)綱齧歯(げっし)目ネズミ科の動物。本州、四国、九州、佐渡島、対馬(つしま)、隠岐(おき)、壱岐(いき)、屋久島(やくしま)、種子島(たねがしま)、淡路島、伊豆諸島、五島列島などに分布し、北海道には別亜種エゾアカネズミA. s. ainuがいる。耕地周辺、草原、森林など広い範囲にすむ。亜高山帯や高山帯には少ないが、それらの場所でも森林が伐採されると進出する。種実や昆虫を食べる。体重は50～60グラム。離島では一般に大形化し、とくに隠岐島前(どうぜん)では80グラムにもなる。富山市と浜松市を結ぶ線を境に、東北本州のアカネズミは染色体数が48、西南本州、四国、九州のそれは46で、大臼歯(だいきゅうし)の大きさにもこれとほぼ一致した違いがみられ、前者では小形である。低地や南部の分布地では盛夏を除く通年、高地や北部では春から夏に繁殖し、1産2～8子。北海道には大陸系のカラフトアカネズミA. peninsulae giliacusも生息している。伊豆の七島熱（ツツガムシ病の一型）には、病原体を保有するツツガムシの宿主として関係している。
