…These were later found to be RNA-type tumor viruses, but the Rous sarcoma virus was thoroughly studied in the 1970s, and provided a breakthrough in the current understanding of cancer genes. As RNA-type cancer viruses, the mouse mammary tumor virus was discovered by J. Bittner in the 1930s, the mouse leukemia virus by L. Gross, J. Molony, C. Friend, F. Rauscher, and others in the 1950s, and leukemia and malignant lymphoma viruses in guinea pigs, cats, cows, monkeys, and other animals have been discovered since the 1960s. It had long been suspected that human leukemia was also caused by viruses, but in the 1980s it was almost certain that adult T-cell leukemia was caused by an RNA-type virus (ATLV). …
