On June 15, 1592 (Bunroku 1), Shimazu retainer Umekita Kunikane, head of Osumi Yunoo and landlord, changed his mind during a military campaign in Korea and seized Sashiki Castle in Ashikita County, Higo Province, which was under Kato Kiyomasa's control. Umekita called on local samurai in the surrounding areas to rise up, and on the following day, the 16th, he sent Tajiri Arabei, Togo Jinemon, and others to attack Yatsushiro Castle in Yatsushiro County, Higo Province, which was under Konishi Yukinaga's control, in an attempt to create an uprising in southern Higo. He also called on samurai in the Shimazu and Sagara territories in Kuma County to join him, expanding beyond the control of a single daimyo. However, on the 17th, Umekita was assassinated by the caretaker of Sashiki Castle, and the uprising collapsed. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
