Born: May 8, 1639, Genoa
Died: April 2, 1709. Italian painter from Rome. His real name was Gaulli. He was a pupil of L. Bolzone, and moved to Rome around 1660 to work as a fresco and portrait painter. His style was an extension of those of G. Bernini and P. Cortona, and he created a decorative and illusory spatial expression, making him a representative of Roman Baroque painting. His major works include the frescoes in the Basilica of Sant'Agnese in Piazza Navona (1668-71) and the ceiling painting in the Basilica of Il Gesu in Rome (68-83).
