A general term for newspapers written in Japanese and published by Japanese communities overseas. Also called Nikkei Shimbun. Immigrant press, or more broadly, a type of ethnic press. It includes the journals of political parties, religious organizations, and specific groups, as well as communications and correspondence, but it usually refers to the general (commercial) papers within them. In a broad sense, colonial newspapers can also be considered Japanese-language newspapers, but many of them are characterized as quasi-publicity papers, the media outlets of Japan's colonial offices.
