A general term for birds of the Trochilidae family of hummingbirds in the order Apodiformes. This large family consists of about 116 genera and 350 species, and is endemic to the Americas and the West Indies. Hummingbirds are generally known as the smallest birds, and are also famous for their beautiful metallic feathers, their unique flying technique, and their diet of flower nectar. The name hummingbird comes from the fact that the sound of their wings when they fly is similar to that of a bee. Total length is 5 to 21.6 cm. Most species are smaller than the wren, and the smallest species, the bee hummingbird Mellisuga helenae (from Cuba), is only 2.5 cm long excluding beak and tail, making it the smallest of all birds.

アマツバメ目ハチドリ科Trochilidaeの鳥の総称。この科はおよそ116属350種からなる大きな科で，南北アメリカ大陸と西インド諸島の特産である。ハチドリ類は，一般にいちばん小さい鳥としてよく知られ，そのうえ金属光沢に光る美しい羽毛をもち，独得の飛行法や花のみつを主食としていることでも有名である。ハチドリの名は，この鳥が飛ぶときの羽音がハチの羽音に似ていることによる。　全長5～21.6cm。大多数の種はミソサザイよりも小型で，最小種のマメハチドリMellisuga helenae(キューバ産)はくちばしと尾を除いた体長が2.5cmしかなく，全鳥類を通じて最小である。
