A military commander in the Azuchi-Momoyama and early Edo periods, and the founder of the Awa (Tokushima) domain. Son of Hachisuka Koroku Masakatsu. Born in Hachisuka Village, Kaito County, Owari Province (Miwa Town, Aichi Prefecture). His childhood name was Koroku, and his common name was Hikoemon. He first served Oda Nobunaga, and then from 1575 (Tensho 3), Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and was active as a member of Hideyoshi's horsemen in kimomori. In 1579, he was awarded 3,000 koku in Sayo County, Harima, for his achievements in the attack on the Negoro and Saika Rebellions in Kii, and the following year, he and his father Masakatsu were awarded 176,000 koku in Awa Province for their achievements in the attack on Shikoku, and entered Tokushima Castle. In 1581, he was appointed Junior Fifth Rank and Awa no Kami. He participated in the Bunroku and Keicho Invasions, and during the Keicho Invasion he rescued Asano Yukinaga at Ulsan Castle. In the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600, he belonged to the Western Army and was tasked with guarding the Osaka Kyutaromachi Bridge and defending the northern entrance to the country, but he claimed to be ill and did not march out himself, instead sending his elder retainer Aoki Hosai to march out. His son, Shizunobu, sided with the Eastern Army, and when it became clear that the Eastern Army would win, he dismissed Aoki Hosai, shaved his head, took the name Hoan, and handed over the family headship to Shizunobu. Later, Shizunobu died first, and he was ordered by the shogunate to be the guardian of his young successor, Tadahide.
