…In the Edo period, it was a general term for protected forests or forests under the control of feudal lords, but the official term Imperial forests refers to forests under the direct control of the shogunate and protected forests registered in the Imperial Forest Registers of each province. Imperial forests established by private feudal lords were called Gohonzan (Hirosaki domain), Onoyama (Akita domain), Miyama (Morioka, Fukuoka, Kokura, Usuki, and Kumamoto domains), Mitakeyama (Mito, Fukui, Tottori, Matsue, Hiroshima, Yamaguchi, and Hitoyoshi domains), and Otomeyama (Nagoya, Wakayama, and Kochi domains), and it was common to avoid calling them Imperial forests. These public and private Imperial forests are broadly divided into (1) forestry-related Imperial forests and (2) conservation-related Imperial forests according to the purpose of their establishment. …
