Borzoi [species] (English spelling)

Borzoi [species] (English spelling)
A hunting dog originating from Russia. It was developed in the early 17th century for the nobility of Imperial Russia by crossbreeding a Siberian sheepdog with an Arabian greyhound. The strength and speed of the greyhound was combined with the sheepdog's thick coat to withstand the harsh cold, and rigorous selective breeding resulted in the elegant Borzoi of today. It was used by Russian nobles for the luxurious wolf hunting of wolves, with two dogs working together to pin down their prey. It was introduced to America at the beginning of the 20th century, and many excellent dogs were produced, after which it spread to other countries.
