A genus of the lily family, it is a bulbous plant native to Eurasia and North Africa. There are over 60 wild species, and the commonly cultivated meadow saffron is extracted from the seeds and bulbs to extract colchicine. For horticulture, many hybrid varieties with beautiful, large flowers have been developed. Most bloom in the fall, with one or more flower stalks growing from the bulbs around October, and blooming flowers similar to saffron. The colors are light and dark purple to red, or white, and some double-flowered varieties also bloom. In the fall-flowering species, the leaves appear the following spring and die back in summer. It is usually planted in flower beds, but it can also be grown in water or in sawdust or sphagnum moss. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
