[Born] Wanli 24 (1596) [Died] Kangxi 12 (1673) A Chinese literati painter from the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. Born in Wuhu (Anhui Province), his pen name was Sekiboku, and his pen names were Wumon Daoren and Zhongshan Lao. He became a deputy tributary during the Chongzhen period of the Ming dynasty, but did not serve the Qing dynasty. He was well versed in poetry, calligraphy, painting, and music, but was particularly skilled in landscape painting, modeled on Huang Gongwang and Ni Zan. He created a unique style of painting using beautiful, light colors, and is considered the founder of the Guju school. His book Taiping Landscape Paintings, published in 1648, was introduced to Japan and had a great influence on early Southern painters such as Chi Taiga and Gion Nankai.
