A deep-sea fish of the family Acanthidae in the order Acanthidae (illustration). It is named after the family Acanthidae, as it has no scales on its surface and its entire body is translucent. It has a large mouth with several canines and numerous dentition in the upper and lower jaws. It has a clear black spot on the front edge of the eye. The body is long and slender and laterally compressed. The dorsal fin is small and located slightly behind the center of the body. The anal fin makes up 1/4 of the posterior part of the body. The pelvic fins are located almost in the center of the body. It has fatty fins. There are two lines of luminous tissue along the ventral surface from just below the pelvic fins to just before the anus. ヒメ目ハダカエソ科の深海魚(イラスト)。体表にうろこがなく体全体が半透明なのでハダカエソの名がある。口は大きく,上あごと下あごには数本の犬歯と多数の小歯がある。眼の前縁に明りょうな一黒点をもつ。体は細長く側扁する。背びれは小さく体の中心よりやや後にある。しりびれは体の後部の1/4を占める。腹びれは体のほぼ中心にある。あぶらびれをもつ。腹びれ直下より肛門直前までの腹面に沿って2本の発光組織がある。南日本から西部太平洋,インド洋の亜熱帯・熱帯海域の深海に生息する。
