This is a type of thermomechanical processing method for steel, in which the steel is plastically processed in a supercooled austenite state, followed by quenching and tempering. The high-strength, tough steel obtained in this way is used for automobile springs, rocket engine cases, etc. The supercooled austenite state refers to the state that occurs when alloy steel, made by adding carbon, silicon, nickel, molybdenum, etc. to iron, is heated to 850-900°C to form austenite, and then rapidly cooled to between 450-600°C. In this case, the metastable austenite structure persists for more than several tens of minutes. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
