Chemist and businessman. Pioneer of the rayon industry. Born in Kaitaichi-cho, Aki-gun, Hiroshima Prefecture (now Kaita-cho). Graduated from the Department of Applied Chemistry at the College of Technology, Tokyo Imperial University in 1908 (Meiji 41). Through the kindness of Kaneko Naokichi of Suzuki Shoten, he worked as a professor at Yonezawa Higher Technical School from 1913 to 1916 (Taisho 2 to 5), while also researching the manufacturing method of viscose rayon in cooperation with the Yonezawa branch factory of Azuma Kogyo Co., Ltd. In 1916, he went on a business trip to Europe and the United States to inspect the rayon industry, and in 1918, with the founding of Teikoku Rayon Co., Ltd. (now Teijin), he became a director of the company along with his schoolmate Kumura Seita, who was also researching viscose rayon, and the chief engineer of the Yonezawa factory of Teikoku Rayon Co., Ltd. After working at the Hiroshima factory, he became president of the Second Teikoku Rayon Co., Ltd. in 1934 (Showa 9).
