...These similarities may be related to the ethnic migration in inland China. Whether there is a correlation between the water dwellers known as Orang Laut (sea people) from Malaysia to Indonesia and the Japanese houseboat people remains an open question.

...the general term for a group of people who live on boats and engage in fishing while constantly moving at sea. The Dan people of Hong Kong, the people who live from the Mergui Archipelago in southern Myanmar to the Andaman Sea in southern Thailand, the Straits of Malacca, and the coastal areas of Indonesia, and who are generally called the Orang Laut (water people), are known as sea nomads. Among the latter, the Bajau people, who live from North Borneo to the Sulu Islands of the Philippines and the southern coast of Mindanao, are well known.
