Irian Jaya (state) (English spelling)

Japanese: イリアン･ジャヤ[州]（英語表記）Irian Jaya

The eastern end of Indonesia, occupying the western half of the island of New Guinea. The name means "Greater Irian" and is also called West Irian. Administratively, it comprises one province, with an area of 422,000 km2 and a population of 1.94 million (1996). The provincial capital is Jayapura on the eastern north coast. The Great Fold Mountains, part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, run through the north side of the island, giving rise to mountain ranges such as Sudirman and Jayawijaya, and include Mount Jaya (5,030m, formerly Mount Carstensen), with a chain of high mountains between 3,000 and 5,000m high, some of which are covered with perennial snow or glaciers.

インドネシア東端，ニューギニア島の西半部を占める地域。地名の意味は〈大イリアン〉で，西イリアンともいう。行政上1州をなし，面積42万2000km2，人口194万(1996)。州都は北海岸東部のジャヤプラ。環太平洋造山帯の一部をなす大褶曲山脈が島の北側を貫いてスディルマン，ジャヤウィジャヤなどの諸山脈をおこし，最高峰ジャヤ山(5030m。旧名カルステンス山)をはじめ，3000～5000m級の高山を連ね，万年雪や氷河を頂くものもある。
