Irian Jaya (state) (English spelling)
The eastern end of Indonesia, occupying the western half of the island of New Guinea. The name means "Greater Irian" and is also called West Irian. Administratively, it comprises one province, with an area of ​​422,000 km2 and a population of 1.94 million (1996). The provincial capital is Jayapura on the eastern north coast. The Great Fold Mountains, part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, run through the north side of the island, giving rise to mountain ranges such as Sudirman and Jayawijaya, and include Mount Jaya (5,030m, formerly Mount Carstensen), with a chain of high mountains between 3,000 and 5,000m high, some of which are covered with perennial snow or glaciers.
