Awatabe

Japanese: 粟田部 - あわたべ

This is the former town area in the northeastern part of Echizen City, in the central part of Fukui Prefecture. It is located in the southeastern part of the Takefu Basin. It was incorporated as a town in 1926. In 1954, it incorporated part of Kitashinjo Village, and in 1955 it merged with Minaminakayama Village and Fukuma Village, and incorporated part of Kitanakayama Village. In 1956, it changed its name to Imadate Town. It has long developed as a commercial town connecting Takefu with Ikeda-go (→ Ikeda Town) in the upper reaches of the Asuwa River. The textile industry is thriving. It is home to Hanagatami Park, a famous cherry blossom spot named after the Noh song "Hanagatami."

福井県中央部，越前市北東部の旧町域。武生盆地の南東部にある。 1926年町制施行。 1954年北新庄村の一部を編入，1955年南中山村，服間村と合体し，北中山村の一部を編入。 1956年今立町に名称変更。足羽川上流域の池田郷 (→池田町 ) と武生を結ぶ商業町として古くから発展。機業が盛ん。謡曲『花筐 (はながたみ) 』にちなむサクラの名所の花筐公園 (かきょうこうえん) がある。
