…In the late 19th century, the only means of transportation between Manhattan Island, which had developed as a commercial city and become overcrowded, and Brooklyn, which was adjacent and continuing to grow, was the ferry boat on the East River. After meeting Hegel at the University of Berlin and becoming an enthusiast, civil engineer John Augustus Roebling (1806-69) immigrated from Germany and succeeded in establishing a wire cable manufacturing business. He was famous for his achievements such as the suspension bridge across the Niagara River. He proposed a plan for a suspension bridge across the East River, and it was built by the New York Bridge Company, which was founded in 1867. Roebling, who became the chief engineer and was in charge of design and supervision, was injured in an accident during a survey and died, and was succeeded by his eldest son, Washington Augustus R. (1837-1926). …

…He also built many suspension bridges, including the aqueduct and the first railroad suspension bridge over Niagara Falls, but he is especially famous for his Brooklyn Bridge (486m long). He was appointed chief engineer of the bridge in 1867, and construction began in 1869, but he died suddenly from injuries sustained during construction, and the project was taken over by his son, Washington Augustus Roebling (1837-1926). In 1867, Washington traveled to England to study a foundation method using high-pressure caissons. After his father's death, he became chief engineer of the Brooklyn Bridge construction project, and despite suffering from caisson disease himself, he continued to supervise the construction from his home using a telescope, completing the 14-year construction work in 1883. …
