Uso-kae - Liar

Japanese:
Uso-kae - Liar

This is an event held on January 7th at Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine in Dazaifu City, Fukuoka Prefecture. Worshippers gather in the evening, bringing wooden titmice (a small bird from the Fringillidae family) and exchanging titmice, saying, "Let's exchange them, let's exchange golden lies for gold." The person who exchanges the golden titmice given to them by the shrine is offered sacred sake by the shrine and is considered to have received good fortune. The titmice are taken home and placed on the Shinto altar as a talisman to prevent fires. It is said that titmice are connected to lies, and that in the ritual all the misfortunes of the year will be turned into lies and turned into good fortune. It was probably a type of fortune-telling for the year in the past, where they would steal things in the same way as in the case of Tamatori.

This event is held at Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, Osaka's Domyouji Tenmangu Shrine (Hashi Shrine), Tokyo's Kameido Tenjin Shrine, and Fukuoka's Sumiyoshi Shrine, where items other than bush warblers are also distributed, but most places do not do the "bush warblers exchange" and only distribute bush warblers. At Usa Jingu Shrine in Oita Prefecture, there is a dove exchange ritual. Items exchanged at other shrines include turtles, jewels, swords, flowers, and daruma dolls, and new items have been invented to keep up with the times.
