Also known as Graves' disease. Hyperthyroidism causes swelling of the thyroid gland and bulging of the eyes. It occurs in young to middle-aged men and women, but is especially prevalent in women. Symptoms include palpitations, shortness of breath, tremors, excessive sweating, and diarrhea, and significant weight loss. Basal metabolic rate and blood iodine levels increase. Treatment includes symptomatic treatment with sedatives and sympathetic nerve blocking drugs, such as thiouracil and methimazole, as well as thyroidectomy and radiation therapy.

グレーブス病ともいう。甲状腺がはれ眼球が突出する甲状腺機能亢進症。青年〜中年の男女に起こるが，特に女性に多い。動悸，息切れ，ふるえ，多汗，下痢などの症状があり，著しくやせる。基礎代謝量と血中ヨード量はふえる。治療はチオウラシル剤やメチマゾールなどの抗甲状腺薬の投与と併行して，鎮静薬や交感神経遮断(しゃだん)薬による対症療法を行うほか，甲状腺切除，放射線治療など。
